Born to be Wild: A 3D Imax film coming April 2011
Born to be Wild 3D is an inspiring story of love, dedication and the remarkable bond between humans and animals. This film documents orphaned orangutans and elephants and the extraordinary people who rescue and raise them—saving endangered species one life at a time. Stunningly captured in IMAX 3D, Born to be Wild 3D is a heartwarming adventure transporting moviegoers into the lush rainforests of Borneo with world-renowned primatologist Dr. Birute Mary Galdikas, and across the rugged Kenyan savannah with celebrated elephant authority Dame Daphne Sheldrick, as they and their teams rescue, rehabilitate and return these incredible animals back to the wild.
ABC News Reports on Orangutan Sanctuary
Bob Woodruff of ABC News ventured into Sumatra’s Bukit Tigapuluh rainforest to get a grip on what’s going on with the rapid deforestation. In May this year the Indonesian government granted new logging concessions to the huge huge paper company called ASIA PULP AND PAPER. They have begun a massive logging operation.
70% of Sumatra’s rainforest has already disappeared, and with it, the orangutan.
Bob Woodruff waded through knee deep mud and waist deep leach infested water to show us an orangutan sanctuary in the area. This sanctuary is a rehabilitation center much like the OFI Care Center in Borneo.
Here orangutans are taught core tactics they must know in order to survive in the wild. Mr. Woodruff was able to help out with some of the training and even had his hair lightly tugged by an ape friend he made in the sanctuary.
Orangutans are trained how to find food in different areas of the forest since much of their area is under attack. The main goal of rehabilitation centers is to create self-sustainable orangutan populations. Populations who will survive without conservation activists.

The Hutan Project recently toured Indonesia with Dr. Birutė Galdikas. One of the tour members has been working on a full documentary from the trip. Here’s a sneak peak.
A few of the Hutan Project’s readers suggested that we post some videos that they found online. Here’s a few.
